David Louis Cunha Foundation Assists Monster Tough 4 Davis Fundraiser.

On February 22nd, 2018, the David Louis Cunha Foundation had the honor of donating $ 500.00 to the Monster Tough 4 Davis Fundraiser held at Saint Timothy’s parish in Warwick. The fundraiser was for Davis McLarnon, a three year old boy who was recently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. To make matters worse, the tumor was metastatic and cells were found in Davis’s spinal fluid. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Davis and his family. We have been told that he is a very strong and resilient child. Like most children seem to be when faced with a severe illness, Davis is a real fighter! As you can see, the fundraiser was a huge success. Money raised will go towards medical bills and daily living, since Davis’s Mom has not been able to work spending all of her time with him at the hospital as he goes through his treatments.
Thank you all for your wonderful support of David’s Foundation. If you should know of a family or group that you believe David’s Foundation could assist, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

2017 Comes To An End

Dear Friends of the David Louis Cunha Foundation,

As 2017 has come to an end, the David Louis Cunha Foundation would like to heartfully thank all of our wonderful friends and family who have supported us. We sincerely appreciate your kindness.

The David Louis Cunha Foundation was established on January 13, 2015, upon the sudden passing of David Cunha. The Foundation’s mission is to provide financial support to families with children living with life-threatening medical conditions. The Foundation also awards scholarships to Smithfield High School graduating seniors who have excelled in community service and embody a generous heart, as did David.

Since its inception, the David Louis Cunha Foundation has provided over                 $ 24,000.00 in donations/grants and scholarships to deserving Rhode Island and some nearby Massachusetts children. In 2017, thanks to the generosity and steadfast support of so many friends and family such as you, David’s Foundation donated a total of $ 14,100.00 and was able to accomplish the following:

1.) May 2017 - Scholarships to Smithfield High School. Two $1,000.00 scholarships were awarded to two seniors who excelled in community service. ($2,000.00)

2.) July 2017 – Edward Madden Open Hearts Camp. A donation of $ 2,500.00 was made to Open Hearts Camp to sponsor ten children for a two week stay. This camp hosts cardiac children who have undergone open heart surgeries, many of who have received heart transplants.

3.) August 2017 – A Wish Come True / Warwick, RI. A donation of $ 5,000.00 was made to sponsor a young boy’s wish for him and his family to vacation on Block Island for one week. As David was, Domenic is a cardiac child, and both he and his sister have had to battle serious health conditions all of their lives and continue to do so.

Also, during this past Christmas season, David’s Foundation was able to donate a total of $ 2,850.00 to the following local agencies to specifically help children…children who do not experience the joys of Christmas that most do…children with no homes or who are away from their homes for good reason…children who were in great need of some Christmas kindness:

Adoption Rhode Island
Devereux-Tanner Hill Houses (Woonsocket & Pascoag)
Christmas Is For Kids
Smithfield Rotary Club
Friends Way (Warwick)

We are also most pleased to announce that the David Louis Cunha Foundation has donated an additional $ 1,750.00 to the Edward Madden Open Hearts Camp to purchase a much needed new AED (Automated External Defibrillator) along with three sets of adult & child pads, and backup batteries. An AED is used to react to and treat sudden cardiac arrest. This AED is crucial to the operation of the camp and the well being of the campers.

As always, if you should know of a family or agency that you believe David’s Foundation could assist, PLEASE let us know.  Reach out to us !

Though part of the David Louis Cunha Foundation’s mission is to provide financial support to families with children living with life threatening medical conditions, we also reach out to children in general who are in need of some compassion and assistance in their daily lives and to local groups and agencies that are committed to help those children.

Thank you all again for the support you give in so many ways. You are all so very essential to the success of the David Louis Cunha Foundation. We are greatly indebted to you.

With our sincere gratitude,

Peter & Cheryl Cunha
David Louis Cunha Foundation.

Bella to meet Mickey!

Today, February 11, 2016, the David Louis Cunha Foundation had the opportunity to grant a wish to a young child named Bella. Her wish was to go to Walt Disney World in Florida this May. This is just the beginning of the great things that the Foundation is doing to help those in need. Thanks to your donations, we were able to put a smile on this child's face (as well as our own). We wish Bella a fabulous time in Disney, and may all her wishes come true.

About DLC Foundation

The David Louis Cunha Foundation was established in January 2015 upon the passing of David Louis Cunha. The mission of the David Louis Cunha Foundation is to provide financial support to families with children living with life-threatening medical conditions.  The Foundation also awards scholarships to Smithfield High School graduating seniors who excel in community service and embody a generous heart, as did David.

David was the beloved son of Peter and Cheryl Cunha of Smithfield, Rhode Island.

David was born with a single heart ventricle with transposition. At ten days of age, David underwent a pulmonary artery banding. At one and a half years, he underwent his first open heart surgery - a Glen shunt. At four years old, he underwent his second open heart surgery - a Fontan. At five years old, he received a pacemaker. Now, because David was such an active and ALIVE little boy, he went through several pacemaker wire replacements...much to the anxiety of his parents and doctors, but through it all, David was the epitome of courage and strength, and truly an inspiration to all who knew him. Both a beautiful smile and friendly character were his trademarks.

David was a 2012 graduate of Smithfield High School and a member of the National Honor Society. He was a Junior at Rhode Island College, where he majored in Mass Media Communications, making the Dean's List. He served as a Senate Page for six years. He was also employed at the law office of Senator Stephen Archambault.

David was a vibrant young man who was full of life. He was very active in community service and volunteered for many organizations including the Matty Fund, A Wish Come True, Special Olympics, Best Buddies and Providence Back to School Celebration. He was a captain of Save-the-Bay Beach Cleanup and participated in the Smithfield Police Explorer Academy. He was an altar server at Saint Michael's Church in Smithfield, served as an Assistant CCD Teacher, and was a member of the Saint Michael's CYO Basketball Team.

David was loved and will be forever missed by his countless friends and family.  David was and continues to be a true inspiration to all who knew him.  A warm & giving heart and a strong & admirable character were David's trademarks.

To contribute to David's Foundation, donations can be made to The David Louis Cunha Foundation, 563 Log Road, Smithfield, RI 02917.
